Bison 2004 Gaelic League: Wolfe Tones Capture Ollie Murray Memorial
Cup
In one of the best and
most exciting finals played to date in Cayman GAA, Wolfe tones,
inspired by the shooting display of captain Eamon Brady, captured
the 2004 Blue Bison Gaelic Football League title against a gallant
and brave Brian Lally led Cabra Gaels.
The Ladies title was
captured by the Emma Ward led Na Piarsaigh who defeated Imelda McCann’s
Buffers Alley in another close affair.
Blue
Bison Ladies Final: Na Piarsaigh 0-5 Buffers Alley 0-3
The ladies final
produced an exciting and well-contested affair in the sunshine at
the rugby club on Saturday afternoon.
Na Piarsaigh
started the stronger and attempted to over power Buffers Alley through
the strong running of Emma Ward, Jodie Sie and Shevaun O’
Keefe. However, they encountered strong resistance from the Buffers
Alley rearguard led by Laura Scanlon and Wendy Dittman, and aided
by the ubiquitous Christine Rigby.
In fact, strong
defence was a feature of this low scoring game with Martina Nelson,
Debbie Strasbourg and Maura Henry maintaining a solid last line
of defence for Na Piarsaigh.
When Buffers
Alley did put points on the board it was from their noted attacking
pair Emma Newball and Imelda McCann who both worked tirelessly throughout.
However, on
the day the better-balanced Na Piarsaigh team annexed the title
thanks to the scoring prowess of Ward, Sie and Nelson.
Na Piarsaigh:
Emma Ward 0-2, Martina Nelson 0-2, and Jodie Sie 0-1.
Buffers Alley: Emma Newball 0-2, Imelda McCann
0-1.
Blue Bison Men’s Final: Wolfe Tones
0-14 Cabra Gaels 0-13
For a long time at the
Rugby Club on Saturday last it seemed as though it would not be
possible to separate these two sides in a match that was ultimately
decided after an unprecedented second period of extra time.
Wolfe tones started the
stronger and raced in to a four-point lead with scores from Brady,
Barry Fitzgerald and Tom Elliot. The Gaels replied with two points
from Roger Casey and Gavin McMaster to leave the scores 0-4 to 0-2
at the end of the first half.
Cabra Gaels started to
put their passing game in to effect and soon took the lead in what
was now developing in to a compelling match and points from Casey
and Lally and an opportunist goal from Lally after good work further
out the field put Cabra in to an 0-8 to 0-7 lead as the game entered
injury time only for the Tones to comeback as Brady pointed a difficult
free from distance to level the match at 0-8 points each at the
end of normal time.
This led to five minutes
a side extra time to try and decide this Blue Bison sponsored final.
Wolfe Tones started with a show of fire power and points from Paul
Deegan, Shane Young, Fitzgerald and Brady aided by good work from
Dan Cummings led to them establishing a 0-13 to 0-8 point lead at
half time in extra time. Cabra were kept scoreless during this period
by a defiant Tones rearguard led by Viv Morahan who was ably assisted
by Aussie Craig McCallum, John Power, Steve Henshaw and Rich Frewin.
At this point Cabra Gaels
redoubled their efforts and so began the much-needed fight back.
A magnificent save from goalkeeper Tony Elliot epitomized the Gaels
refusal to go down without a considerable fight and the tenacious
defending of Gavin McMaster, Ian Comins and Peter Harman along with
the efforts of Jeff Arkley and Paul Morris laid the foundation for
this Gaels comeback with the impressive energy of McMaster being
a significant feature of this game throughout.
The Tones net was then
rattled after a move started by Alan Geraghty and Tim Fitzgerald
allowed Casey to put Lally through for a vital goal. The Gaels were
now buoyant and Casey and Lally added further points to make it
0-13 to 0-12 with Rich Stewart and Danny Santiago continuing to
fight valiantly for the Cabra Gaels cause.
In what was now a wonderful
atmosphere, contributed to by the packed and noisy bleachers and
with time running out, referee Alan Kelly awarded Cabra a free which
Casey duly dispatched from distance over the bar to tie the game
at 0-13 points each as the final whistle went on the second half
of extra time.
While ‘nobody deserved
to lose the final’ was a recurring observation after the game,
there could only be one winner on the day, one name etched on the
Ollie Murray Cup for the 2004 season, and this was evident as the
final period of five minutes extra time got underway.
It was very much nip
and tuck with chances at a premium but following a move started
by Brady, Tom Elliot put over what was to prove the winning point
for Wolfe Tones. Cabra did have some last gasp chances to bring
the game level but the blocking and harassing of the Morahan marshaled
Tones defence managed to keep the Cabra Gaels out to the final whistle
which signaled the end of forty five minutes of enthralling action.
Wolfe
Tones: Eamon Brady 0-7, B Fitzgerald 0-3, Tom Elliot 0-2,
Shane Young 0-1, and Paul Deegan 0-1.
Cabra Gaels: Brian Lally 2-2, Roger Casey 0-4 and
G McMaster 0-1.
