Cayman Gaelic Football

Welcome to the Cayman Islands Gaelic Football Club (CIGFC).

Gaelic Football in the Cayman Islands traces its origins back to 1987 when an Ulster side took on a Rest of Ireland 15 in the Island's first ever challenge match.

The interest in Gaelic football grew through the 1990's as the Irish population on the Islands increased culminating in the formation of an official Gaelic Football Club in May 1999. With an initial membership of some 30 players the club has expanded so that over 150 playing members are expected to participate in next season's League competitions.

The annual men & women's League competitions which are the focus of the CIGFC season have been running since 1998 and are contested on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings at the Rugby Club in South Sound. The men play for the Ollie Murray memorial trophy.

The League programme runs from January through to the finals weekend in early June and is enjoyed by participants of different skill level and nationality. Players from the Cayman Islands, Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, the US, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand compete to make this one of Cayman's leading multi-cultural sporting competitions.

Other events taking place throughout the year include the year opening Mixed 7s tournament in January, the St. Patrick's Day festivities in March, the annual Club golf scramble in July / August, the Pete O’Neill Memorial October Mixed 10s tournament, and the squash social and Christmas drinks towards the end of the calendar year.

Annual trips away are also organized. In the past, Cayman sides have competed at tournaments in Toronto and Fort Lauderdale . The next CIGFC tour will be the 2007 Paddy’s weekend trip to Jamaica . The 50 person touring party will take in Ireland’s world cup cricket match against Pakistan in Kingston and follow that up with a 12 a side gaelic football game against Jamaica the following day in Ochos Rios.

The CIGFC have also hosted a number of ladies and mens touring sides through the years, the most recent being the Jamaican incursion in June 2005 (which featured on RTE radio) where honours were shared over 2 challenge games.

Joining the Gaelic Football Club is an excellent way to get fit, meet lots of different people and enjoy some great nights out! Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Club should email: caymangaa@gmail.com

We are very proud to retain Digicel as club sponsor for the 2006 – 2007 season. Digicel ….
